The Prelude
Merriam-Webster defines a prelude as an introductory performance, action, or event preceding and preparing for the more important matter. So this is the prelude to a new year, a new decade and a new story. The details have yet to unfold, but I know the ending is extraordinary.
Success is a team sport, what is your position? A coach – do you set vision and drive structure? Or are you a key player – a defender – one who protects and will be there through the thick & thin or a mid-fielder – one who understands the game and helps set the pace? Or will you simply be one who encourages and cheers from the sidelines? Whatever your position, I want to thank you for participating in the game and to my success for the greater good.
Commitment – what is it really?
I made the decision to change my body. I was fed up with things always staying the same, only looking great because of knowing what not to wear. I was so committed that I even took my before pictures in early November. Because commitment is to decide, right?
“When nothing is in place, and you decide to go for it, anyway, trusting that by engaging fully in the process you’ll learn & experience all you need to succeed… that’s commitment.”
— Richard B. Brooke
However, my body did not start to change even after I decided and committed myself to do the work necessary to see change. But what is commitment – really? I recently read John Milton Fogg’s take on the above quote and he, as he usually does, asked a question. Click here to read the full page dated Jan 1, 2010.
Seven birds are sitting on a wire. Three decide to fly away. How many are left?
This simple story question illustrates the point that even when you (or I in this case) “decide”, nothing happens until you take action. Still seven birds sat on the wire UNTIL the three that decided actually fly away.
I’ve taken action to change my body because I agree with John – one is not committed until there is action.
In terms of changing my body, I do have a few things in place. I’ve got my NextFit Keychain Trainer in hand, the support of Get Bozeman Moving and I’m going for it. I trust that by engaging fully in the process I’ll learn and experience all I need to succeed. That is why I can post this more recent picture today, before it is considered a “before” picture.
My after picture is seen only in my mind’s eye and that is enough to keep me in action and committed.
As a health and wellness coach, I understand that the ability to take action (playing well at the “inner” game) deserves celebration and maybe that is why I can post a picture like this in a spirit of gratitude. Because change is a process and we progress through stages.
As I learned it, there are six stages of change. The first of the stages is where we resist change, we are in denial and yet to even understand that we are responsible for the life we are living and we simply accept our destructive behaviors and limited choices. Stage two – we become aware and take notice that there is inner conflict. Then we prepare and get ready to change. The stage I was in when I decided to commit and took my first set of “before” pictures back in November. Now I’m in action! I’m working out 3-5 times a week, drinking more water and making healthier food choices more times than not. I’ll stay in this stage as long as it takes until I have harmony between my mind, body and spirit, honoring the wellness warrior within before I move to maintenance and the final stage of exiting the cycle of change. When it just is!
All this being said, I believe as Margie Warrell writes in Find Your Courage, that the most profound transformation occurs when there is “unity between what your heart calls you to do and what you are doing; between who your heart calls you to be and who you are being. When you are living fully in integrity, you can experience wholeness and harmony at every level of your being; body, mind, and spirit.”
What do you want to achieve and how can I support you?
